Lakewood Teens Against Tobacco

Who we are:

The Lakewood Teens Against Tobacco Coalition was organized in 2009. We are a passionate group of students, parents, concerned residents, and community organizations committed to preventing teen tobacco use in the City of Lakewood.

Our Mission:

The goal of the Coalition is to ensure that children and teens are not illegally sold cigarettes and other tobacco products from local merchants. The coalition also seeks to reduce the harm and devastation that occurs from the use of tobacco products and to promote a healthier and smoke-free Lakewood that is safe for youth.

The Facts:

A recent survey revealed that 44.8% of retailers in Lakewood were willing to sell cigarettes to minors.

* 3 out of 4 smokers start before the age of 18
* 4,000 youth under 18 smoke each day. 1,100 will become regular    smokers
* 1/3 of youth smokers die of smoking related illnesses
* 23% of high school students smoke - At Lakewood High School that would be 990 students!!
* In LA County, 400,000 youth smoke
* Nicotine addiction in youth differs from adults
* The younger the initiation, the harder to quit

* Adolescents who smoke are more likely to use alcohol, marijuana and cocaine
