Smokefree Outdoor Areas: Stockton Poll

In August 2003 the Center, together with the American Cancer Society, commissioned Goodwin Simon Strategic Research to conduct a telephone survey of voters living in Stockton, California. The purpose of the survey was to assess attitudes among city voters about possible laws to prohibit smoking within 20 feet the entryways of public buildings.

The survey found strong support among Stockton voters for laws restricting smoking within 20 feet of doors, windows, or vents in buildings in which smoking is now prohibited inside.  In fact, 66 percent would favor such a law, and only 28 percent would oppose it.  The support may be a result of the fact that one in three households (33%) contains someone who either has a chronic illness made worse by exposure to secondhand smoke, or has someone with that condition in their family.  We also observed a solid consensus among voters in support of laws restricting smoking in public areas.  Fully 76 percent favor current city laws restricting smoking in public areas.
