Community Organizing Updates

The Center is excited to bring you our new “Community Organizing Updates.” We will publish these new “Organizing Updates” periodically to complement our regular “Policy Updates” which we regularly produce. We hope that these stories from your colleagues around the state will both inspire you and teach valuable lessons for your work. Enjoy!

November 2011
This edition of the Organizing Update is focused on the newly passed state law, Senate Bill 332. The update discusses ways to use the law to move your smokefree housing campaign forward, whether it's an ordinance effort or a voluntary policy campaign.

June 2011
The "Unfriendly Neighbors" editon of the Center's Organizing Update features stories and organizing tips about the Neighborhood Market Association, a trade group that has been opposing tobacco control policies across the state.

June 2010
This edition of the Organizing Update features the start of a new series highlighting accomplished individuals in tobacco control. This first "Personality Profile" features Roy Rosell who works for the Asian Youth Center in Los Angeles. This edition also features a follow up story to an earlier story on the campaign for smokefree parks and beaches in Santa Barbara.

March 2010
This edition features stories about "New Ways and Old Realities" of connecting with elected officials. One story looks at the old realities of bringing coalition members together and negotiating complicated issues with elected officials, in a story about the recent smokefree LA dining campaign. Another story looks at new ways of connecting with elected officials on Twitter.

January 2010
This “New Solutions Edition” features two stories about new solutions the Center offers to help you with your campaign (local campaign website and local policy trainings) and how these resources are being used in the communities of Santa Barbara and San Diego.

November 2009
This edition features two stories about tobacco retailer licensing campaigns around the state. One portrays efforts by Oralia Vallejo and her coalition in the rural, pro-business community of Corcoran and one highlights a strong community advocate, Marybeth Carty, in the beach town of Carpinteria.
