Downey Fresh Air Coalition
Mission Statement:
We are a coalition of Downey residents working to protect people from secondhand smoke exposure in outdoor spaces. We also encourage healthier living, by educating residents about the harmful effects of tobacco use.
In Downey, 12.3% of residents are smokers (~10,000 people). This is higher than in nearby Cerritos (about 4,400 people), where kids and seniors have been protected from secondhand smoke in their public parks since 2005.
JOIN US to learn how you can help make Downey a healthier place to live. Together, we can make a difference in our community!

Join our adult and youth coalitions, and make Downey a healthier place for all!
Quick Facts on Secondhand Smoke:
What is secondhand smoke (SHS)? SHS is the smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and the smoke breathed out by the smoker. SHS has over 7,000 chemicals and nearly 70 can cause cancer.
Can it hurt me? YES. Each year in the U.S., secondhand smoke kills 53,000 non-smokers, which is about the same number of people who die from murder, drugs, and AIDS - combined.
What are the effects of SHS? SHS can cause deadly diseases like lung and cervical cancers, heart attacks, brain tumors, sudden infant death syndrome and heart disease. SHS can also cause respiratory and ear infections, bronchitis, asthma and pneumonia!
