Healthy Lungs @ Home – Cerritos
About Healthy Lungs @ Home – Cerritos:
Healthy Lungs @ Home – Cerritos (HLH) is comprised of various organizations and community residents in Cerritos who desire better protections against secondhand smoke in their homes.
Cerritos residents of apartments and condominiums who suffer from secondhand smoke currently have few, if any, options to protect themselves from it. Often, they cannot afford or do not want to move away to escape secondhand smoke.
Because of this, HLH was formed to educate members of the Cerritos community about secondhand smoke in their neighborhoods and foster an in-depth discussion about how it can be better addressed.
Facts:
Secondhand smoke contains over 4,000 chemical compounds including more than 40 Group A carcinogens, or cancer-causing agents.
- California EPA Report, September 1997
The annual cost of secondhand smoke exposure in the U.S. is approximately $10 billion—$5 billion in direct health care costs and $5 billion in indirect costs such as lost wages and reduced services.
- Economic Effects of Environmental Tobacco Smoke, Society of Actuaries, March 2005
Smoking creates a high risk of household property damage and bodily harm. It is the third leading cause of fires in the home and the number one cause of home fire deaths.
- U.S. Home Structure Fires, National Fire Protection Association, March 2010
Secondhand smoke drifts through light fixtures, electrical outlets, plumbing fixtures, walls, ceiling spaces, doorways and windows. The smoke then lingers and detrimentally impacts the health of residents, particularly children and senior citizens.
- Air Monitoring: Confirming the Risk, David Bohac, Center for Energy and Environment, May 2006
